The Powerful Peer Project is a peer mentoring project of Diversity and Disability Alliance in partnership with Community Disability Alliance Hunter

The aim of the Powerful Peer Project is for trained peer mentors from Cultural and Linguistic Diverse ( CALD) backgrounds  to provide one-to-one peer mentoring support and guidance to their fellow peers from CALD backgrounds.   Peer mentoring does this through sharing knowledge, ideas and experiences to support, encourage and motivate another person.

This Project provides an opportunity for peers to become peer mentors through attending an 8 week  peer mentor training and continue developing their expertise by coming together in community of practice  sessions during the course of this project.

After graduation, peer mentors  will be available to  provide time-limited, one-to-one mentoring relationships to other peers and their families.
In the mentoring relationship, peer mentors and mentees will work on specific goals, individual strengths  and on the choices and control peers have in their lives.

Peers who wish to access a peer mentor will be matched to peer mentors with similar life experiences and know how. The peer mentoring sessions will be not more than a total of 5 sessions.

The project will deliver
  • Peer mentoring training and mentor refresher training led by experienced peers both from DDA and CDAH
  • Bi monthly community of practice session of peer mentors led by peers
  • One to one peer mentoring sessions, consisting of not more than 5 session per mentoring relationship
  • DDA team support for both mentors and  mentee’s when required
  • Promotional resources and peer engagement in community events and networks  to raise awareness of the peer mentoring opportunities
